In about 15 minutes the missing fonts will reappear. In this way, if you have the settings correct, the client machine can have fonts deleted but it will not effect the master server folder. The way I would do it is to have the client machines backup to the master server folder then the master folder syncs back to the client machines.

I don't see a "perfect" free implementation where your users will be able to install fonts instantly, have them shared and sync to all users, and not require a restart of the program and or logging in/out of the machine. If you can train your users to install fonts to the network location, the sync should have it on their computer fairly quickly. I've tested windows sync center, it may work for this application. Specifically looking at the registry change, though that was for Windows XP. I did look at FontExplorer server first since we have some of their software already but I just don't have $1800 (or anything for that matter) to put to this. Toby wells - Thanks for the info but I can't go the FontExplorer server or other server based font manager (unless its free) simply because there is no money for this project.

With FontExplorer, you can just rescan the folder. If I went the sync route, they would have to log out and back in every time they wanted to add a font. I don't think I want to go the sync route because one of the reasons that the department wants this is so they can add fonts quickly themselves but not have to do it on each computer. Does anyone see any issues with this? This will only be for a max of 10 or so users. I am concerned that I might be missing something. This way, the whole department will all be on the same page. My plan is to revert all my designer's system fonts to the default ones and then have FontExplorer reference a network drive for all the other fonts that they want.

We currently use a program called FontExplorer X Pro to manage fonts on individual machines (it gets us around having to be an admin to install fonts and gives us a few other benefits that we like) and it has the capability to use fonts in folders other than the system fonts folder. I have found a few off the shelf solutions but they are all cost prohibitive. I am the IT director for a large format printing and advertising business and we have a design department that has asked me if there is a way to centrally manage their fonts. Has anyone had any experience with putting fonts on a network drive? I ask because I am not sure of the implications.
